I designed a comprehensive and visually engaging digital home for the Brown County Indiana Historical Society using WordPress and the Enfold theme. As an organization dedicated to preserving the deep-rooted history of the county—from its 1836 founding to the creation of Brown County State Park—the website needed to function as a living digital museum and an accessible community resource. I focused on a clean, “legacy-first” aesthetic, utilizing rich archival imagery to highlight local heritage, including pioneer history, local stone masonry craftsmanship, and veteran affairs. By prioritizing a mobile-responsive, high-performance design, I ensured that genealogists, researchers, and local residents can explore the society’s extensive records seamlessly across any device.

The Challenge

Preserving a region’s history presents significant organizational challenges. The challenge for the Brown County Indiana Historical Society was to take a diverse collection of physical and digital records—ranging from the “Lest We Forget” veteran archives to community newsletters and event details—and translate them into a fast-loading, user-friendly digital environment. We had to solve the puzzle of making historical data easily searchable and logically categorized, ensuring that the transition to digital access did not overwhelm the user or sacrifice the integrity of the original history.

The Strategy

The design strategy focused on “Timeless Preservation.” We prioritized a layout that uses a professional, structured hierarchy to mirror the prestige of the society’s work. By organizing the site into distinct pathways for Historical Archives, Community Events like their pitch-in dinners, and Genealogical Research, we created an intuitive roadmap for visitors. The visual strategy relied on classic, trust-building typography and high-contrast archival media to keep the focus entirely on the historic content, building immediate institutional trust with history buffs and local families.
