Old Lamps & Things

WordPress Design, E-commerce Customization, and Antique Restoration Strategy.

I designed a specialized and visually rich digital catalog for Old Lamps & Things using WordPress and the Enfold theme. For a company that deals in rare, authentic antique lighting and period-specific parts, the website needed to feel like a high-end restoration studio. I focused on a “vintage-industrial” aesthetic, utilizing high-resolution photography to highlight the intricate detail, glass textures, and historical patinas of their collection, ensuring that collectors and designers immediately recognize the authenticity of the inventory.

This project is a prime example of the specialized commerce platforms I build and manage; in fact, this is 1 of many sites like this I build and manage for businesses dealing in unique, one-of-a-kind inventory. I engineered a highly customized WooCommerce setup that replaces the standard “Buy Now” checkout with a robust Quote System. This allow users to build a list of specialized items—ranging from Victorian chandeliers to obscure lamp parts—and submit them for a personalized professional quote, ensuring that shipping and restoration specifics are handled with expert care.

“When you are dealing with one-of-a-kind antiques, the website is the first step in a professional consultation. I focused on a design that reflects the history and quality of Old Lamps & Things, ensuring that from the first click, every collector and designer feels they’ve found the most reliable source for period-perfect lighting.” — Doug Walker

The Challenge

In the world of high-end antiques, a traditional “add-to-cart” experience often fails. The challenge for Old Lamps & Things was to move beyond a basic shop and create a consultative digital experience. We had to solve the puzzle of managing thousands of unique SKUs while ensuring that customers could easily inquire about specific item conditions or restoration requirements. Because many of these items are irreplaceable, we needed a system that captured high-intent leads without the friction of a standard retail checkout.

The Strategy

The design strategy focused on “Curated Restoration.” We prioritized a layout that uses classic typography and a sophisticated, warm color palette to mirror the glow of the products themselves. By organizing the site into distinct pathways for Complete Lamps, Specialized Parts, and Restoration Services, we created an intuitive roadmap for both DIY restorers and professional interior designers. The visual strategy relied on high-contrast imagery to showcase the “hand-crafted” nature of the inventory, building immediate trust with a discerning audience.

The Solution

  • Customized WooCommerce Workflow: A tailored commerce engine that converts the shopping cart into a “Quote Request” hub, perfect for high-value and unique items.
  • Product-Siloed Navigation: Dedicated sections for era-specific lighting (Victorian, Art Deco, Mid-Century) to maximize user relevance and search engine authority.
  • Technical Part Cataloging: A structured architecture designed to help users identify and request specific replacement parts for antique restoration projects.
  • Responsive Visual Branding: A clean-cut design built on the Enfold theme that maintains its “boutique” look and technical functionality across all mobile and desktop devices.

The Result

Old Lamps & Things now possesses a polished, high-performance digital hub that perfectly reflects its status as a leader in the antique lighting industry. The site is fast, secure, and serves as a vital 24/7 representative for the company’s deep historical knowledge, successfully bridging the gap between old-world craftsmanship and modern digital inquiry. By modernizing their digital presence and quote system, I’ve provided them with a platform as enduring and precise as the lamps they restore.
