Antique Door Hardware

WordPress Design, Heritage E-commerce Architecture, and Restoration Authority Strategy.

I designed a specialized and visually rich digital marketplace for Antique Door Hardware using WordPress and the Enfold theme. For a company focused on the niche world of authentic vintage and antique hardware, the website needed to feel like a curated gallery of historical artifacts. I focused on a “timeless-industrial” aesthetic, utilizing high-resolution macro photography to highlight the intricate craftsmanship and aged patinas of period-specific pieces, ensuring that collectors and restoration professionals feel the history of each item immediately.

This project is a prime example of the high-detail catalog and resource platforms I specialize in; in fact, this is 1 of many sites like this I build and manage for specialty hardware and architectural salvage companies that require complex inventory management and precise categorical filtering. I engineered a robust backend designed to handle a vast array of unique, often one-of-a-kind items, organizing them into a clear, searchable architecture that prioritizes historical accuracy and user ease.

“When you’re dealing with historical artifacts, the website is the first step in the preservation process. I focused on a design that reflects the craftsmanship and history of Antique Door Hardware, ensuring that from the first click, every restorer and homeowner feels they’ve found the definitive source for period-perfect detail.” — Doug Walker

The Challenge

In the world of antique restoration, the details are everything. The challenge for Antique Door Hardware was to take a massive, diverse collection of hardware spanning multiple centuries and design styles—from Victorian and Craftsman to Art Deco—and translate them into a cohesive digital catalog. We had to solve the puzzle of making technical specifications (like backsets and spindle sizes) accessible to DIY homeowners while maintaining the high-level expertise required by professional architects and historical preservationists.

The Strategy

The design strategy focused on “Authentic Restoration.” We prioritized a layout that uses classic, understated typography and a warm, aged color palette to allow the metallic textures of the products to stand out. By creating distinct pathways for Door Knobs, Escutcheons, Hinges, and Full Sets, we ensured that users can find exact matches for their restoration projects. The visual strategy relied on high-contrast imagery to showcase the “patina of time,” building immediate professional trust with the restoration community.

The Solution

  • Era-Siloed Navigation: Dedicated sections for historical periods and architectural styles to maximize user relevance and technical accuracy.
  • Integrated Identification Tools: A structured layout designed to help users identify their existing hardware styles and find appropriate replacement parts.
  • Complex Inventory Architecture: A robust system built on the Enfold theme designed to handle individual item variations and technical specifications for unique antique pieces.
  • Responsive “Shop-Floor” UI: A fast-loading, clean-cut design that maintains its organizational integrity and visual quality across all mobile and desktop devices.

The Result

Antique Door Hardware now possesses a polished, high-performance digital hub that perfectly reflects its status as a leader in the architectural salvage industry. The site is fast, secure, and serves as a vital 24/7 representative for the company’s deep historical knowledge, successfully bridging the gap between old-world craftsmanship and modern digital retail. By modernizing their digital presence, I’ve provided them with a platform as enduring and precise as the vintage hardware they preserve.
